Can't say much more about it, because I'm about to leave home for today,
but here are some first runtime experiences with the script:

I've downloaded stuff with wget, and ran cran2deb.pl. It failed with the first
package, i.e. I think it correctly build the deb, but seems to fails over
Lintian warnings:

$ ./cran2deb.pl
building package builds/r-cran-date_1.2.18-0.r2d.1_i386.deb ...
build failed for builds/r-cran-date_1.2.18-0.r2d.1_i386.deb

$ tail -10 date_1.2.18.log
dh_md5sums -pr-cran-date
dh_builddeb -pr-cran-date
dpkg-deb: building package `r-cran-date' in
`../r-cran-date_1.2.18-0.r2d.1_amd64.deb'.
 dpkg-genchanges
dpkg-genchanges: not including original source code in upload
dpkg-buildpackage: binary and diff upload (original source NOT included)
Now running lintian...
W: date source: maintainer-upload-has-incorrect-version-number 1.2.18-0.r2d.1
W: date source: binary-nmu-debian-revision-in-source 1.2.18-0.r2d.1
Finished running lintian.

But:
$ lintian r-cran-date_1.2.18-0.r2d.1_amd64.deb
... does not give any error...

Some minutes later... I think I solved this issue. The script has "i386"
hardcoded, but the debs are build with amd64 in the file names, hence it
'thinks' it failed, but didn't...
