I agree, one of the main reasons to have pbuilder in the first place is to be 
certain about the dependencies. I'll remove it. It has not helped much 
anyway. It was kind of a stupid thing to do. pbuilder caches the packages it 
downloads frequently somewhere, right?

I'll add the respective 'announcement' of the error to cran2deb.pl now.
