It seems that yes, when -Bsymbolics-functions is used -fPIC is needed in order
to avoid copy relocations bugs. Seems that all this time we got away with an
unspecified behaviour of gcc, which changed with gcc5 on amd64.
Other archs suffered the problem before, but we never received a crash report
from them (like armhf, for example), so we realized this when it started
popping up on amd64/i386+gcc5.
