[Pkg-bitcoin-devel] Disk space and location

Hi,

I've recently installed bitcoin-qt and I noticed it defaults to ~/.bitcoin. 
What's the reason for the hidden directory? 
In the package description it says: 
"This requires 20+ GB of space, slowly growing."
While it is still '13 weeks behind' it is already taking 50GB which is rather 
far off the '20+ GB and slowly growing' statement. Am I doing something wrong 
or will it consume much less space when completed or ... ?
