[Pkg-bitcoin-devel] metapackage for bitcoin

Hi all,

I’m quite happy to see that you guys are working to get Bitcoin into Debian,
but I have one worry.
Your ‘bitcoin’ package looks like its packaging the software “Bitcoin Core”
and then naming it “bitcoin”.
Thats an awefully generic name for one specific implementation of the
protocol.

As you probably know, bitcoin is not a software, it is a protocol and a
network and a money. Most importantly is that the protocol is open and
everyone is encouraged to do their own implementation for this.

As such you’ll find there are a dozen wallet implementations and there are
half a dozen full-node implementations.

I personally work on the bitcoin classic full node implementation.

May I suggest you make the ‘bitcoin’ debian package a meta package and
rename the current bitcoin package to ‘bitcoincore’ or simlilar that
provides a “bitcoin-full-node”.

If you say that you need more than one client before this makes sense, maybe
you could include the Bitcoin Classic client in debian too. I already put it
on ubuntu with some ppas;
https://launchpad.net/~bitcoinclassic

Thanks for reading!
ps. I’m not subscribed to this list yet.
