There are several ways to maintain packages:

  * Debian Developer (DD): can upload any package and can vote
  * Debian Maintainer (DM): can upload designated packaged
  * Member of some team: can prepare and have DM or DD in team upload
  * individual: can prepare and have DD sponsor an upload

You are certainly quite welcome to become a DD or DM, but what I
suggested - and find quite appropriate - was only that you join this
team and commit to continuous ongoing supervision and care for the
wellbeing of the package, i.e. that you _maintain_ the package - as
opposed to only initially _create_ the package and then leave it to
bitrot (or hope that someone else pick up where you left off).

If your interest now is limited to helping with an initial single
package release then that is fine too: Then I suggest you publish the
work you are able to do on your own somewhere and file a so-called "RFP"
bugreport to propose others to pick up from there.

But I sure hope you are in it for the long run, as a team member.

What is your interest?
