I'm pretty sure that you tought that as well, but what about booting
a linux version that can mount irix fs and get rid of the password?

Maybe another trick can be booting the irix kernel in single mode (I do
not know if it asks for password, on a sparcstation I logged in simply
booting in single user mode, no password was asked to me).
