Well, the corresponding script was partially rewritten before
releasing 2.40, please see
| $ cvs diff -rblender-2-37a-release -rblender-2-40-release release/scripts/wings_import.py | diffstat
|  wings_import.py |  193 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++----------

However, the Debian packaging doesn't change this file, so I'm afraid
this is an upstream issue. Please, if you find the time, report this
problem to the blender.org Bug Tracker at
<http://projects.blender.org/tracker/?group_id=9&atid=125>, adding all
suitable information you deem important (possibly imcluding a sample
file), and send a short pointer to the newly opened tracker item to
this bugreport at <349649 at bugs.debian.org>. If for some reason this
isn't possible I'll act as a proxy forwarding this issue upstream.

Cheers,
Flo
