I would be proud to help, too.
I'm not a DD but I think I can post patches here so that others can
check and apply.

I've been tracking the upstream CVS version and at present time my
debian dir is quite ready to build blender using the refactored scons
system. If anyone ask I can make public my modifications even by now,
but note that I did not keep much compatibility with the current build
procedure.

I was thinking to package also texture and/or sequencer plugins, and
maybe scripts that are not included with the release but currently I
don't have time for that, the blender package is far more important
so let's concentrate on that :)
