JFYI, the FTBFS seems to be resolved: it turned out that by now
lowering the optimization was enough to make blender built on mips and
mipsel. Actually this was the first thing I tried back in January and
it didn't work then, oh well.

Hrm, unfortunately I have spent far more time on blender than I
initially planned[0] to do, so I really need someone to take over
some work! Especially bug handling comes to mind...
