You mean it remains hung? What it the status of the X server? Maybe you
could kill it, and even restart it? I guess you might be using a
graphical music player, thus an X freeze would lead to a pause in the
music playback.

Which X driver are you using? With DRI (direct rendering) enable? Are
other 3D-demanding applications behaving well?

Would you be interested in a binary backport of blender 2.44 for stable
so that you could try and reproduce this hung?
