Seems like the problem was the newline character at the end of
/etc/bluetooth/passkeys/default.  No that the file is 4 bytes long,
the pairing succeeded.  README.Debian recommends "echo PIN >default",
which thus did not work for me: "echo -n ..." should be suggested
instead.  Hope I got it straight now.
