I would guess that you are running Debian "lenny" (a.k.a Debian
release 5, a.k.a. "stable").  If so, the easiest route for you is
probably to use backports (http://backports.debian.org/), which has
Boost 1.40.  See http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/
