Hm, this is not sufficient to persuade chromium-browser that it is the
default browser. Setting 'Chromium' in
gnome-default-applications-properties makes chromium start prompting to
make it the default browser again!

If I acceed to chromium's demands, it
sets /desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec to
'/usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser', rather than
'/usr/bin/chromium-browser'.

Having set chromium as the default in chromium itself, the bundled copy
of xdg-settings does a weird thing:

        $ /usr/lib/chromium-browser/xdg-settings get default-web-browser; echo $?

        0

'xdg-settings check default-web-browser chromium-browser.desktop'
continues to compare /usr/lib/chromium-browser
against /usr/bin/chromium-browser and report 'no'.
