Do you use GNOME, KDE, XFCE, or none of the above? What does
xdg-settings get default-web-browser
say?
I suspect this is the longstanding "xdg-settings ought to pop up a
window explaining how to set BROWSER, EDITOR, PAGER, and MAILER when
no desktop environment is in use", though it could also be Bug#576829.
And of course chromium could do a better job in explaining the
difficulties it runs into.
