Could you get a backtrace when in this state?  It works like this:

 1. Install chromium-dbg.
 2. Run "chromium --temp-profile -g" from a terminal and type "run" to
    get it going.
 3. Get a tab to hang.
 4. Hit ^C.
 5. Get a backtrace following the instructions from
    /usr/share/bug/chromium/presubj.

Yes, there are lots of differences between Chromium and Firefox.
