Well, --debug helps by automatically making sure you have the right
paths set (you could also do that on your own).  It could just as well
not be helpful at all for this problem.  If it's not, then this more
of an upstream or debhelper problem since the package uses straight
debhelper for creating the dbg package without doing anything special.

Anyway, if anyone really wants this fixed, it's going to require some
dedicated time and effort to track it down.
