   * What led up to the situation?

It keeps saying "chromium isn't your default browser",
each time I starts it up, though I have set it to
default more than once.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

1. I tried the command "update-alternatives", and had already set
chromium to be my default browser:
qxu at debian:~$ sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser

2. I tried "System Settings" -> "Preferred Applications", and set the default
web browser to chromium over there.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

When I restarted chromium again, it still told me that chromium is not
my default browser, and if I want to set it to the default browser.

I clicked the button to make it the default browser, but it kept saying
it is not my default browser the next time it is started. 

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

By right, any one of the methods (update-alternatives, System Setting ->
Preferred Applications, or the prompt in the chromium itself) should have
worked.
