okaaaay, finally: yes, i can confirm that killing the gpu-process (ps
aux | grep gpu) will make things "work" again... without actually
having to kill off the entire chromium browser.

examples where hanging occurred include PDF viewing (where, clearly,
the GPU was asked to do the rendering).  just killing the process
--type=gpu-process resulted in the browser recovering from its "hang",
leaving a blank part in the middle where the PDF should be.  a simple
"scroll" operation resulted in things going back to normal.

the full set of options (the process that needed killing) is below.

context: this is an extremely powerful skylake-based system (i7) with
a headless nvidia 1050 GPU which should NOT be being used... but might
be, if you look closely at the options of the gpu-process, below.... i
think it's saying because "support-dual-gpus=false" that the answer
really is "no, the NVIDIA headless GPU is not being used"... but
you'll have to check that (ask me if you need info or commands to be
run).

however i can *definitely* confirm that i am *NOT* running chromium
through optirun (bumblebeed / primus).
