Ok, I guess the behavior I'm seeing now is related to added fallback code. 
I had exo-utils installed and due to a different bug (#757098) the behaviour 
of xdg-open made no sense to me, as it would always start a file manager.

I'm adding the dependency in the cinnamon-core metapackage, and also in to the 
cinnamon-common package that uses gvfs-open directly, but I expect to fix the 
latter.
