The reason is that upstream maintainers have decided that they want this 
as the default... Apparently, other non-free operating systems are using 
this as the default (influenced by smartphones and tablets) and so some 
maintainers are also switching the default.

I agree with you that this is not intuitive and that it's not a nice thing to 
change the default for a user when doing an upgrade.  We will be reverting 
the default to the classic scrolling mode in the next upload.
