Did this start happening with the recent update to 3.0, 
or was this already happening before?

I tried to reproduce it, but I wasn't able to make my nemo crash, 
so we will need more information:

Is the issue related with the amount of files in the directory?
Does it happen with a directory containing only JPEG files?
Are you opening the files with some image editor/viewer?

Any other piece of information of how I could be able to reproduce 
the problem would be helpful.
