I still consider this a regression, since previous behavior is horribly
broken, also with respect upstream "assumptions", e.g. StumpWM manual
creation:

BTW, IMHO this change would have required a major release bump.

However, given that power is in the hands who does the work, I will not
complain further and instead accept it as it is.
