Sorry that I'm not familiar with it as well.

PO files are updated by debconf-updatepo when I call `fakeroot
debian/rules clean'.  It just inserts a 'Language' tag [1] into PO
files.

I think it should be safe.  If it's wrong, please report, I will
restore them.
