I'm working on the missing symbols ones (since it's got a bug report),
but do want to discuss the patch I'm making with upstream before
wanting to commit to doing this in Debian.  I havn't quite got it
working though.

I might look at creating a patch for the useless linking too but guess
that's of lower priority.
