Ah, the joys of a new cups... who can describe it? ;-)

But do upgrade to the latest Sid cups packages, they fix an extreme amount
of bugs.

I finally got around to tying this, had to set up using unstable with Etch. At first there was no difference. Nothing seemed to have changed. Still had no hplip showing up unless I was modifying a printer, and bug #373793 was not changed. I thought maybe some config files didn't get changed, so I purged most of the cups packages and removed the remaining cups folders in /usr/share and /usr/lib and then reinstalled. The result was worse. Saw there was no link to hplip in /usr/share/cups/model folder, so tried to reinstall the hplip and hpijs packages, still no improvement, the link was still missing. Decided to upgrade to hplip/hpijs from unstable. Now I had the correct listing on the model page, but more problem after the printer was added. The printers page listed the printer but had behind the printer name; HP Business Inkjet 1000 Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)-HPLIP 0.9.11 (en) "Filter "foomatic-rip" for printer "HPBIJ-1000" not available: no such file or directory. Deleted and added printer again, same result. I noticed that the 'stop printer' red button was in fact a green ' start printer' button. Clicked it and the "not available...." message disappeared, but I could not print anything, from any program including
the HP-Toolbox. Tried adding another printer, same result. Had to start the printer first, but no printing action. Restarting cupsys just returned it back to 'not available...." state, I started the printer, but couldn't print. I checked to make sure I had all the necessary packages installed, once before I couldn't print and it was due to a missing foomatic package. While checking saw the printconf package, it claimed to be able automatically set up usb and parallel printers using cups and foomatic. So installed it, and it's dependencies, deleted all my printers and tried it. It didn't even find my usb printer, in other words found no printer and did nothing. So opened cups web admin., installed my printer, everything went well, correct driver listed, printer was added, already started, and started to print. But it still didn't print the test page correctly, was actually worse now as it used 11 sheets instead of 8, 3 extra blank pages. At first I wasn't too concerned, since the new HP
-toolbox now popped up a window with all my available printers, before it only found one. But even though I could select any of the printers by clicking on the button, only one would print a test page. Then I discovered that if I went into the 'set printer options' and chose High Quality (auto detect paper) and then set the printout mode to: 600 dpi and printed the test page, it only used 6 sheets of paper. That was weird. Not much use for checking how a 300 dpi would look or for using the standard setting - controlled by printout mode.

So long story short, the web interface of cups is better with the unstable pkgs, the correct driver show up in the model page, although two of every driver seems to be listed. Printing a test page is still broken, as per bug #373793. actually worse. Guess I'll update that bug report. It would be nice to be able to check how the selected settings will print out. Too bad it didn't work in hp-toolbox either.
Well, thanks for the suggestions. It is better than it was.
