Subject: cups: printer prints empty sheets only
Followup-For: Bug #377604
Package: cupsys
Version: 1.2.1-3
*** Please type your report below this line ***
Some days ago the first Debian bug report I ever sent was erraneously
declared
for package "cups 1.2-3" and thus filed as BUG 377604 and sent to
unknown-packages at qa.debian.org, In the meantime I found out that it belongs
to package cupsys. To make good for that, I shall send this mail to the said
BUG number at debian.org and, using another mail, directly to Debian
CUPS Maintainers <pkg-cups-devel at lists.alioth.debian.org> and to the
author of
HOWTO-BUGREPORT.txt, Mr. Kenshi Kmuto <kmuto at debian.org>, with my original
report and its ever so long cupsattach.txt.gz as attachments, Please do
understand that correspondence and other printouts are burning under the
fingernails now, not being able to print since June 9th. There have even
been some financial losses already.
Please excuse my being thus awkward and sending report to the wrong package.
For you, of course, things do look different, but for me as ordinary debian
user cups is cups and it is neither cupsys nor cups-devel nor
cups-whatever-you
want (well, and 'testing' is 'desktop' and 'unstable' is 'testing' and
'stable'
is 'absolutely unusable except for servers' because I can't risk to receive
state-of-the-art-software after I have died).

Package: cups
Version: 1.2.1
Severity: important
( ??? up to July 4: 1.2.1-2; then after a testing upgrade: 1.2.1-3 ??? )
Printer lp is a SAMSUNG CLP-500(SPL-C) on parallel port /dev/lp0,
localhost:631
Up to June 09 my Samsung CLP-500 worked well. Then there was an upgrade
and the
line
E [09/Jun/2006:10:21:16 +0200] Creating missing directory
"/var/run/cups/certs"
showed up in cups' error_log. Since then, I only get
- either immediately one single empty sheet of paper
- or after an endless processing time a sheet with timeout message (see
attachment 1, a)
Since June 28 I rather panicky try to find out the reason.Ihave '--purge
--reinstall install'-ed whatever seemed to belong to cups or was
mentioned in
cups postings I found in debian-user. Most of the changes I made seem to
have been rechanged by the testing update of cupsys on July 4, but
/dev/lp0 is
still worldwide +rw. This update rechanged error_log to 'warning', and
I than
rechanged to 'debug' again, but I can not find the lines which stand for
those
changes. In its debug mode,
The attached gzipped file 'cupsattach.txt' holds
1) some considerations which perhaps are important.
including two other bugs which must get reported separately but
are mentioned here because of their possible influence on printing
2) /etc/cups/printers.conf
3) /etc/cups/cupsd.conf with two inserts commented out
4) lp.ppd in /etc/cups/ppd, with comments before ppd-text
5) /var/log/cups/error_log, with comments before error_log text
