The patch fixed the "8 minutes" problem. When I sent the same file to the 
printer via the same mechanism (kpdf), it started printing almost 
immediately. Unfortunately, it still died at the same place on the first 
page.

The dying toward the end of page 1 is apparently a kpdf problem, when I 
printed the same file using lpr, it worked fine. All four pages very quickly.
