Bug 232549 is still present in 1.2.7-4: 'lp -n number' still prints
'number' squared copies of the job. Unlike the original reporter, I
notice that this problem occurs regardless of whether I print from a
remote client or from the print server itself.
I reproduced the problem using an HP PSC 2510 connected over the network
using the 'hpoj' package. CUPS sees "DeviceURI ptal:hpjd:my.printer.hostname.here".
I reproduced the bug by printing a PostScript file made by running latex
and dvips on the following LaTeX input:
\documentclass{article}
\begin{document}
This is a test document to investigate a printing bug.
\end{document}
On the multipage document I was printing when I noticed the problem, I
saw that I got runs of several copies of the same page in sequence
before getting copies of the next page. After I canceled the print job,
I neglected to preserve the output order, but I think that within
sequences, the number of copies printed of a particular page was less
than the number of pages I asked for, and that overall, the page number
was not monotonically increasing throughout the output. When I can spare
the paper and ink, I'll conduct another test and report the output
order. (I may be able to do this at work this week or next week, as I'll
be testing the CUPS packages found in etch to see if I can upgrade the
print server from sarge without breaking printing for MacOS users.)
I seem to recall seeing the same problem with MacOS X clients and a
Debian print server several years ago. I don't know if it was ever
solved. If I can dig up my notes on that, I'll post 'em to the bug
report.
