That indeed shows that the kernel cannot communicate with the printer,
and if it works with the same kernel and cups on different hardware,
the problem is hardware related. 

Can you try the printer on a different USB port? If you have a hub in
between, try to attach it directly? If you use a thin/custom cable,
try without?
