Package: cups-common
Version: 1.4.3-1
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

During last days I was surprised by a strange behavior of my cups system. I
coud not print to the default printer, but could print to the same printer
if I use the explicit name. After googling a bit, I noticed that other
person had a similar problem due to an ancient ~/.lpoptions file

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=481481

Yes, I had one pointing to an ancient HP Deskjet 690C which is no longer in
my system. The good news is that this is now honoured. Removing that file
made my printer work again as default.

However, and this is the reason for this wishlist bugreport, I think more
verbose error messages would have helped me a lot.

For instance, when I tried to print a document with the wrong setup, I
receive:

lpr: Error - no default destination available.

Something like

lpr: Error - no default destination available [~/.lpoptions used].

or

lpr: Error - no default destination 'cdj690c' available.

or a combination of both would have been very useful.

The same happens if I call lpq, where info about the default printer would
have also been appreciated.

Thanks for taking care of cups.

Cheers,
