[Pkg-cups-devel] Bug#588643: cupsd fails at launch with symbol lookup error

Package: cups
Version: 1.3.8-1+lenny8
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I'm maintaining a lenny system, and during the normal upgrade process,
something went very wrong with CUPS. The daemon won't launch:

  : nr at homedog 10073 ; sudo /etc/init.d/cups start
Starting Common Unix Printing System: cupsd/usr/sbin/cupsd: symbol lookup error: /usr/sbin/cupsd: undefined symbol: _httpReadGNUTLS
   failed!

I'm not able to identify exactly what the problem is or where things
went wrong.

N.B. reportbug claims my installation of cups is awry:

  There may be a problem with your installation of cups;
the following files appear to be missing or changed:
debsums: can't open cups file /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/ipp (Permission denied)
debsums: can't open cups file /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/lpd (Permission denied)
debsums: can't open cups file /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/serial (Permission denied)

I would prefer to stick with stable but I will try a more recent
release. I have to assume some kind of security upgrade is
responsible for this problem? I don't know...
