they did not convert them on their own, but used the fonts from 
<ftp://ftp.izmiran.rssi.ru/pub/fonts/urw/>.

However, the newer revisions of the fonts found in this directory are 
only available in type1 format and are AFAICT already included in 
Debian's gsfonts package.

Erm, which bug report?

Anyway, I think we should convert the well-maintained gsfonts from the 
Debian package using the script I proposed in my original bug report 
instead of relying on some third-party fontforge sources. That is, 
unless we find an even more actively maintained source for the fonts, 
e.g. texlive.
