The dot "." is the default delimiter between levels of IMAP folders
(user.js.castro at gadelek.com is a subfolder of user.js at gadelek.com). Set
"unixhierarchysep" to 1 in imapd.conf, if you want dots in your
usernames. In that case, the slash "/" becomes the seperator
(user.js.castro at gadelek.com is the parent of
user.js.castro/Trash at gadelek.com). I never actually tried that, it might
have unwanted side effects if the client doesn't check which seperators
the server uses.
If you are not bound to use the dot as the seperator between
first/second name initials and lastname, you could use the minus sign
"-" instead.
