Updated team opinions after being expressed on the list:

I tend to agree that we should keep the status quo and stick with upstream.
Myself: BDB

Thus, the team has voted to maintain BDB as the default. I've tagged the 
bug wontfix, and will leave it up to Mark (submitter) to close the bug 
if he wants.
