I can't reproduce this.

astronut at astronut:~$ ps -ef | grep imap | wc -l
20
astronut at astronut:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/cyrus2.2 stop
Stopping Cyrus IMAPd: cyrmaster.
astronut at astronut:~$ ps -ef | grep imap | wc -l
1 [the grep process]
   


Did you wait a minute or two? I believe that if an imap process is
actually in use (serving a client) it will continue until it's finished
and then quit.
