It is not about getting it to work. It is about getting it to work RIGHT
(i.e. over authenticated LMTP carrying over the SMTP auth information, or
postman-authenticated LMTP (unauth. LMTP is good only on localhost using
UNIX sockets), plus the reverse /sbin/sendmail path for sieve, etc.
Unfortunately, I can't really comment on the quality of your example script,
as I don't grok exim :(
