So, what is the conclussion? Should I care about libdbX.Y for python2.6
or not?

Well, I have usually took standalone berkeley db python package and
prepared patch on top of python2.x version to support newer berkeley
db version.

I could do that again if really needed, but I would like to hear the
maintainer and/or release team voice first.

The db4.7+db4.8->db5.1 transition is almost finished, with the one
exception and that is python2.6. (Not counting broken upload of nmh.)
