You are thinking too small.

Knot DNS team publishes packages also for Debian Jessie and Ubuntu
Trusty and both of them are only debhelper 9 and python-{breathe,sphinx}
compatible.

That make sense to me, but I will need a debhelper9, python2 branch
available as well.
