Yes I was looking for all the help I could find here offline.  No it
might do more harm than good, as it just adds to the merrygoround in
my head that has been alsa and its modules or whatever they are
called.

It seems
dpkg-reconfigure alsa-base; alsaconf; reboot
are what saved me.

Indeed, even till today I don't know what the alsa equivalent of
cat > /dev/audio is, /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p or c or what.

And if /dev/dsp is an alsa thing or not [trying to configure
acarsd.org program]

Often any help lists require subscription to post a question, but with
my tiny modem they would overflow me daily, even though I could read
them on gmane.... ye, no mail option, but just to ask one question...
