i just discovered that i had working macros for this problem in my
muttrc already...!

# <ESC>1 to use GnuPG
macro generic \e1       ":source /usr/share/doc/mutt/examples/gpg.rc\n" "Switch to GNU-PG"
# <ESC>2 to use PGP2
macro generic \e2       ":source /usr/share/doc/mutt/examples/pgp2.rc\n" "Switch to PGP 2.*" 

i must have found it in some other documentation many moons ago...
