I have run dpkg-reconfigure tzdata it gave me /etc/timezone. No idea why it was not
available from day one. A smallish patch that checks for the existence of files prior to
their copying was added.

The script then terminated nicely. And if I would not be running the unfortunate kernel
2.6.30, then I would also be hacking along nicely with the virtualbox, I am sure :)
