ah, if _that_ is the problem, then yes, Eucalyptus should be recompiled.
Charles had tried this, but so far he was unsuccessful because of another
gizmo surfacing. Chris?

Well, I admit that Eucalyptus is somewhat fragile. It seems to work
when it is working, but there are destabilising side-effects of any change
you do to it. I'd just like to have something that works and that upstream
found the time to confirm that it works. Debian should reduce and
secure the effort for upstream, not the other way around.

Would you tolerate a libhibernate3.0-java package better?
