Can you try to switch message folder quickly when you startup to see
if you can avoid the hang? I've seen some messages that trigger an
endless loop in gtkhtml.

If that doesn't work, try to disable the preview pane with
gconf-editor. Disable /apps/evolution/mail/display/show_preview.

If that doesn't work either, try to downgrade evolution to see if it
is a regression.
