Just happened again.

Obviously, evolution was thinking I'm offline. Maybe some network
manager magic going on; could have been the problem in the other cases,
too.
I don't know how to handle the bug - it was not obvious to me that
evolution thinks it's offline and thus disabled the send/receive button,
since I never used the offline option before...
OTOH, the behaviour is consistent, and maybe network manager is to blame
of sometimes not detecting properly if I have an internet connection or
not.
