I installed the latest version of evolution available -- 3.12.11 -- from
Debian download site.

The following errors appear in syslog:-

Jun 6 02:54:57 roblaptop evolution.desktop[8345]: (evolution:8345):

deprecated and shouldn't be used anymore. It will be removed in a future
version.

It also displays spurious messages in the in box with no subject or
message body and all with a date/time stamp that reflects when evolution
was started.

Clicking on send/receive brings up a dialogue box that cannot be closed.

According to the evolution web site the latest stable version is 3.16.2.
Why are the Debian packages so far behind?

I am running on:-

Linux roblaptop 3.16.0-4-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 3.16.7-ckt9-3 (2015-04-23)
x86_64 GNU/Linux
