[Pkg-exppsy-pynifti] Converting NiftiImage to ndarray gives "ValueError: dimensions too large"

My python-nifti package does actually seem to be part of the standard universe repositories. Here a cut and paste from synaptic

Section: Science (universe)

I also checked my repositories. These are all standard except for this one: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tonddast:/itk/xUbuntu_8.10

The (possibly relevant) following packages are installed:
python-2.5, python2.5-dev, libitk, python-itk, and python-numpy

I am tempted to remove all the packages, and reinstall them all again from scratch. Any suggestions before I do this?
