I meant _upon apt-get upgrade_, currently you probably do:
1. stop any running daemons
2. install new version
3. restart according to your rules

instead you should
0. make a note in /tmp if a running daemon is detected
1. stop any running daemons
2. install new version
3. restart according to that note in /tmp
