Just this:

# ls -l /etc/fetchmailrc                       
-rw------- 1 fetchmail root 325 2009-09-28 23:09 /etc/fetchmailrc
# grep START_DAEMON /etc/default/fetchmail
START_DAEMON=no
# /etc/init.d/fetchmail start
Edit /etc/default/fetchmail to start fetchmail
# /etc/init.d/fetchmail stop 
Pidfile not found! Is fetchmail running? ... failed!
                   ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
