Thanks for reporting this. You are the second victim, so
this is a bug afterall.

Until we can fix it you may be able to workaround it by purging and
reinstalling.

I have also been able to reproduce it by setting up a chroot and
issuing:

apt-get install firebird-s32-server firebird-server-common
firebird-utils libfirebird-s32

Starting FireBird: invoke-rc.d: initscript firebird, action "start"
failed.
dpkg: error processing firebird-s32-server (--configure):
 subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Setting up firebird-utils (1.0.3-1) ...

Errors were encountered while processing:
 firebird-s32-server
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Second try will eat your /etc/init.d/firebird script.
